Pagliacci
Ruggiero Leoncavallo
Opera
Premiere 5. 8. 2011
Open air opera at the world unique outdoor revolving auditorium! Pagliacci was an instant success and it remains popular today. It contains one of opera's most famous and popular aria "Vesti La Giubba".
For the first time in its history, the Open-Air Theatre with the revolving auditorium will stage the famous veristic opera Pagliacci. It was in the 1890s and along with Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana that this work (Pagliacci) inaugurated a whole new era in the history of the music theatre, known as verism, and which is still popular today. Pagliacci narrates the “true” story of a commedia troupe that arrives in an Italian village to stage a theatre performance. The relationships among the members are principally dominated by love and passion - because of his murderous jealousy the head of the troupe Canio even commits a double murder. Apart from its richness of melodies and famous arias (Laugh, Clown, laugh!), the attraction of this opera consists especially in the fact that the plot of the commedia, which the actors play for the villagers, gradually effaces the boundaries between stage and real life. Great human tragedies take place in reality and not only on theatre stages.
