The dance and music production Through the Carpathians is based on traditional expressions of folk culture from selected regions of the Carpathian mountain arc. As pastoral culture spread from the southern Carpathians through Transcarpathian Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland to eastern Moravia and the southeastern tip of Silesia, shared musical and dance traditions, as well as common cultural connections, emerged across these regions. The beauty of traditional singing, archaic musical instruments and older dance forms creates a rich mosaic while honouring the roots of folk culture—a culture that was shaped in the past by remarkable performers who gave it its distinctive character.
In preparing the programme, the creative team drew inspiration not only from collections of folk songs but also from archival audiovisual recordings documenting the music and dance traditions of bearers of folk culture in their original environment.
The premiere took place on 4 April 2025 at Divadlo Radost in Brno.
